At about three o’clock, Jesus called out with a loud voice, “Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani?”
which means “My God, my God, why have you abandoned me?” Matthew 27:46 NLT
Darkness fell as Jesus called out to God: “My God, my God, why have you abandoned me?”, and sometimes we feel as though we have been rejected by God when we are the ones who turn our backs on him.
We do this sometimes without realising, and sometimes being very much aware... We have to be careful and intentional and take responsibility for our actions to ensure we are the ones aligning our lives with God, and not expecting him to align himself with us. And then we get bent out of shape because He isn't present.
Society tends to play a huge part in this separation, as earth is the enemies domain, and he'll use whatever he can to separate us from God. He's normalised sin, made righteousness feel wrong and out of place and has infiltrated our surroundings.
We have to remember that when Jesus took our sin and freed us from death, it wasn't a free pass to live in sin, but a reminder to live our lives honoring that sacrifice. The day Jesus took on our sin, that was the first time he had ever been truly separated from our God, that's why the world went dark, there was sooooo much sin in the world that Jesus had basically absorbed that his father became his God. Jesus felt the rejection we feel.
But there is good news, because of Jesus's sacrifice, we are no longer bound by the enemy, we are no longer separated from God, because he accepts us as AND where we are. We CAN'T EARN God's grace. mercy or love, because that's who God is: He is Love. It's an amazing free gift that we can and should share with others. If we live our life for God and reflect his love for others to see, his love can be experienced by others and they can in turn be freed from the spirit of rejection that the enemy tries to tie us down with.
