The Last Word: Peace

Jesus knew that his mission was now finished, and to fulfill Scripture he said, “I am thirsty.”

John 19:28 NLT

To be thirsty is to be unsatisfied, and to be unsatisfied is not peaceful. We are left trying to quench whatever that thirst might be - physical, emotional or spiritual.

I have been physically thirsty when I've been dehydrated and simply needed water, but I've also been physically thirsty when I've been lonely and wanting affection or attention. I've been emotionally thirsty when I've let the enemy spin a web of lies in my heart and mind and I've definitely been spiritually thirsty when I've not spent enough time with God, in His word, or around his church. And I'm sure I'm not alone in any of these thirsts, and probably plenty more too.

Jesus had never experienced any of these thirsts because he had spent his life with God, honouring and obeying him. But when he went to the cross, he felt them all and on an extreme level. He didn't just feel the weight of thirst, dissatisfaction, longing, disquiet or shame, one person would feel in their lifetime, he felt it for ALL OF CREATION. He carried the weight of everyone who had already been, everyone who currently is and everyone who is yet to come. He took it all for us, just so God could be reunited with us each individually and that we would know heaven rather than hell. That we would experience eternity with our Father rather than an eternity in thirsty suffering.

It's in that moment we are reminded that Jesus is the bridge TO God, he is our Saviour and point of connection. He tore the veil of death and sin that separated us from our heavenly father and bridged that gap.

He is the well of living water (John 4:10), he is everything that we thirst for physically, emotionally and spiritually.

"But those who drink the water I give will never be thirsty again. It becomes a fresh, bubbling spring within them, giving them eternal life" John4:14 NLT

He satisfies the thirst, and brings the peace that we long for.

Jesus is the difference between a life of suffering and a life fully satisfied.
